Mary trained as a psychotherapist in the Tivoli Institute and as a Creative Arts Therapist in NUI Maynooth. She works in the traditional ways that you might expect from a counsellor / psychotherapist, providing a safe space where you can explore what is troubling you in confidence and without fear of judgment.
Mary works with clients over 18 years of age to help them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and how they are in the world and in relationships. She also believes that understanding is key to building resilience and choosing options that are healthier for us, so she is really interested in providing psycho-education to clients. She also offers creative options such as sand tray and art therapy, where this suits the client themselves. These creative options can work on a very deep level, and at the same time, they help clients express difficult issues and situations, in a gentle way.
Mary is experienced in working with a very wide range of issues including loss, relationships, fear and depression. She has also worked extensively in the areas of trauma, abuse, suicide and sexuality.
She has completed a post-graduate certificate in Body Psychotherapy, which allows her to bring a deeper awareness of the body — how it is impacted by our emotions and also how it can be used to help regulate difficult emotions, into the therapy. This, along with mindfulness, can be very helpful for clients, particularly in managing stressful situations.
Mary is fully accredited by the IACP, IAHIP, and ICP, working to their codes of ethics. She has regular supervision to ensure that professional and ethical standards are being maintained, and she engages in on-going CPD in the area of psychotherapy.
