WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Counselling & Psychotherapy are ‘talk therapies’ which work on different levels to aid your emotional health and wellbeing. The aim of counselling and psychotherapy is to support and help people who are worried, distressed, anxious or in emotional pain.

Counselling tends to be short-term, and is generally concerned with a particular problem or situation. Psychotherapy is longer term, and helps you to get to know yourself on a deeper level, It helps you gain insight into your relationships and how you are in the world.

Both counselling and psychotherapy are trauma-informed, whereas psychotherapy is particularly suitable for working with and processing complex trauma safely.

Counselling & Therapy professionals are trained to provide a welcoming, safe and non-judgemental space, where you can share the feelings, concerns and difficulties that you are encountering in your life at the moment.

Through the process, both the counsellor and client together gain insight and awareness into your problems as well as explore your own resources and ability to improve your life and your relationships.

The counselling / psychotherapy process is one of exploration which helps clients to accept what is outside their personal control, while being empowered to change what is within their control. This is a process of transformation, where clients can gain a deeper insight into themselves.

You can talk to your counsellor or psychotherapist about any issue that is of importance to you. These issues may include:

  • Negative feelings and self-beliefs
  • Anxiety
  • Depressed state
  • Difficulties that you are experiencing in friendships, relationships and family
  • Work-related difficulties
  • Issues from your past, including trauma an abuse
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Suicidal ideation and coping with loss by suicide
  • Sexuality
  • Gender
  • Self-harm
  • Many other areas of concern

We are an LGBTQAI affirmative practice, and welcome diversity and work clients from all backgrounds.

Psychotherapy and counselling can be an asset to self-development and improving self-esteem. It can be a support in times of crisis or change and the process can be either short or long-term, depending on the individual’s needs.

Where appropriate and agreed between therapist and client, some of our psychotherapists may work using creative methods. These methods may include, sand tray, art, mindfulness, body psychotherapy, EMDR and others. This way of working can help in dealing with past trauma, improving self-image and self-confidence, while enhancing social and relationship skills.

Counselling & Psychotherapy also incorporate somatic experiencing and mindfulness.

Individual therapists may have a particular interest in certain areas of practice, so we would encourage you to read the biogs on the website, and then to make contact with a particular therapist to have a brief discussion and make an appointment for an initial meeting.

Like other areas of life, the first therapist you meet may not be a good match for your needs or your preferences, and we always encourage clients to meet other therapists if that is the case. This will be your space, requiring commitment and input from you, so it is important that it works for you.
